Fluorescent light bulbs have been the most common lamp type available to consumers for many years. While they were once the most energy efficient lighting option, advances in LED technology have made LEDs more affordable and widely available. When compared to fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs are more energy efficient, last significantly longer, and don’t contain mercury.
In June of this year, five more states have enacted laws that end the sale of most fluorescent light bulbs. Hawaii, Colorado, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Maine have joined California and Vermont in the push to phase out fluorescent lamps in favor of the safer, more energy efficient option – LED. This legislature is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 11.6 million metric tons by 2050 and 5,675 gigawatt hours in electricity savings in 2030.
